You just received the news that your doctor is adding insulin to your diabetes treatment plan. The use of insulin to control your diabetes can be confusing & intimidating. It does not have to be. Using insulin is a positive experience because it helps you to manage your diabetes.
The first thing to remember is that insulin is not a punishment in any form. If you are using insulin, it is because insulin is absent from your body, or your body still makes insulin but it is not enough. Sometimes oral meds are no longer working, so insulin is added to your treatment plan. Your doctor will discuss your dosing requirements with you.
Insulin injections are nothing to be afraid of, even for people that are fearful of needles. Modern technology has made the needles so small & thin that the insulin injection is rarely felt. Used correctly in conjunction with your meal plan & exercise, insulin can give you excellent control.
There are many different guides on how to self administer an insulin injection, so this topic will not be covered in this guide. The basics of using insulin are simple, & require knowledge of how insulin works which your doctor should explain to you. Insulin use also requires knowledge of insulin delivery systems, & insulin supplies that will help make your life with insulin a breeze.
Insulin delivery
Insulin delivery systems are a matter of need & choice. Insulin users that have insulin pumps as their delivery system have much different guidelines that will not be covered here. The focus of insulin delivery systems for this article will be on syringes, insulin pens, jet injectors & inhaled insulin.
Dosage amount & syringe size
Insulin syringes & needles come in different sizes. The amount of your insulin dose determines the size of the syringe that you will need to use. If you are taking 30 units or less, a 3/10 cc (30 unit) syringe will work. If you are taking 31 to 50 units, 1/2 cc syringe (50 unit) will be needed. If your dose is 51 units or more, a 1 cc (100 unit) syringe will be necessary. The needle sizes vary for each syringe size. Syringes may be purchased from a pharmacy.
Insulin syringes are disposable, & should be discarded after one use. A bio hazardous container such as a sharps container will be needed to hold discarded syringes. These containers can be obtained from some waste disposal services, & may purchased from any pharmacy. Disposal of sharps containers requires special handling. Your doctor, diabetes educator, or pharmacy should be able to tell you where sharps can be disposed of in your area.
Insulin Vials
Liquid insulin comes in vials & insulin pens. Vials are stored in the refrigerator until use, & are discarded after the insulin is used up, or after 28 days, whichever comes first. Vials hold various amounts of insulin depending on the brand. Insulin is drawn up into the syringe from the vial & can be injected into many areas of the body, usually the thigh or abdomen. Most types of insulin require a prescription.
Insulin pens
Insulin pens are a convenient way to administer insulin. An insulin pen looks like an oversized ink pen, & uses disposable needles. There are two different types of pens. One type is prefilled with 300 units of insulin. The prefilled pen is discarded after the insulin is used up or after 28 days, the same as for vials. The other type uses insulin cartridges, & the cartridges are changed using the same schedule that is used for prefilled pens. Insulin pens are not refrigerated after the first use.
Needles for the insulin pens come in different sizes. Insulin dosages are dialed on the pen in one-half & one unit increments depending on the type of pen used. The result of dosing by pen is fewer dosing errors. Insulin pens are handy, & allow easy dosing for people on the go. Pens are also discreet. It is not recommended that pen needles be used more than once for the same reasons that syringes should not be reused; bacteria & possible infection. Pen needles should be discarded in a sharps container.
Another insulin delivery device that falls into the insulin pen category is called the InnoLet. This device looks like a kitchen timer with a big dial. The InnoLet holds 300 units of insulin & is very handy for people with visual difficulties.
Jet Injectors
Jet injectors release a tiny stream of insulin through the skin by using a mechanism that creates high-pressure air. The injector does not use a needle. After the insulin dose is loaded into the injector, the injector is placed against the skin & a button is pressed to release the insulin into the skin. Jet injectors are not very popular among insulin users due to bruising & other factors.
Inhaled Insulin
Exubera, the only insulin that is inhaled, was approved for use by the FDA in January of 2006. Your doctor will advise you if inhaled insulin is an alternative for you to use to treat your diabetes. Exubera comes packaged as a dry powder in blister packs, & the packs are loaded into an inhaler. The insulin is inhaled into the lungs. This method of insulin delivery has some restrictions that should be discussed with your doctor.
Diabetes supplies
After you decide which insulin delivery system you will be using, a carrying case will be needed to carry your insulin, meter & other necessary items. A multitude of diabetes products are on the market to accommodate your needs. Choosing the right products will make the time that you spend on diabetes management more productive. The best way to locate diabetes products is to search for them online, or look in diabetes magazines.
It is important for insulin users to carry a meter & glucose tablets at all times. Insulin can cause ?lows? which can lead to unconsciousness if not treated promptly. Insulin users also have to test more frequently than non-insulin users.
Now that you have the insulin basics, you should be confident that you can use insulin proficiently & painlessly as part of your treatment plan. Discuss with your doctor which insulin delivery method is best for you, & start on the road to better diabetes control.

Shifting calories is a great way to lose weight, because it helps you easily trick your body.
When you eat low calorie or low carbohydrate, your body gets used to the same routine. Eating 1200 (or howevermany you choose) calories every day is something that your body can easily get used to, & it will adjust accordingly. It will lower your metabolism accordingly, & it will make you lose weight at a much slower pace.
With the shifting calories method, your body never knows what’s coming to it, so it will never be able to plateau. You’ll continuously lose weight, over & over again.
This is also great for your psychological mindset. When you do the shifting calorie method the right way, you shift you calories to a certain level on different days. Because some days are almost drastically higher, you get to ?cheat? on those days. There is more. This is great for people because they do not feel like they are missing out on their favorite foods, or that they are different from the non-dieters in their life.
You’re also never bored with your diet, which is very important. ?Diets? do not really help people ? but lifestyle changes that are easy to commit to for life are things that will allow weight-loss to stay off for a long, long time.
With the shifting calorie method, you also do not need to deprive yourself of nutrients, as you would on diets such as the cabbage soup diet, the cookie diet, or other popular fad diets. You can eat whatever you want, as long as it is within calorie allotments.

Green tea is a drink widely consumed in China, Japan, & other Asian nations & is gaining popularity in many Western nations. There is more. The tea is made from dried & steamed leaves of the Camellia sinesis bush, a plant native to Asia.
Green tea is also promoted as a herd that has the ability to avert certain bacterial infections. Apart from tasting great, green tea has long established a reputation for conveying splendid health benefits, & is particularly suggested for the ill. The benefits of green tea are becoming more apparent.
Green tea is prepared by delicately steaming fresh tea leaves, whereas black tea is made from leaves that have been dried out & roasted, & that therefore looses a lot of their medicinal power.
Studies into the compounds found in the tea do suggest that the optimum way to obtain the greatest health benefits of green tea is to drink it freshly made, after soaking the leaves for up to five minutes.
In order to gain any health benefits, a regular daily intake, ideally three to four cups per day of green tea or green tea extract is thought to help your overall well being.
Green tea has been attributed with offering a variety of health benefits, many of which have not as yet been uphold by any scientific evidence & some that may just be folklore.
These are just a few of the health benefits of which green tea has been connected to - reducing the risk of heart disease, lowering cholesterol levels, cancer prevention, weight-loss, improved memory abilities, increased immune system response, & recently even been claimed as a possible way to reduce rheumatoid arthritis pain. Green tea is readily available in health food shops, chemists, & all over the internet.
Regardless of whether the benefits of green tea are as widespread as some sources allege, a few mugs of either green or black tea is an ideal addition to a diet as an alternative to high calorie fruit drinks & sodas.

Often & unfortunately, ulcers on the feet become a common result of diabetes. Once an open wound is present on the foot, it also becomes prone to complications that may rise from infection.
Prevention of infection may be achieved through the use of anti-bacterial, anti-fungal & anti-viral essential oils like Tea Tree oil. Tea Tree oil is also a commonly recommended essential oil that has historically assisted with the recovery of foot ulcers for many reasons.
First, Tea Tree oil has an unusually high concentration of terpinen-4-ol, an alcohol, which constitutes up to 35% of the finest quality Tea Tree oils. Research indicates the Terpinen-4-ol, successfully helps the body achieve normal inflammation levels, as indicated in a November, 2003, Australian study. Inflammation naturally occurs any time the body responds to trauma within the body. Inflammation results in redness, swelling, increased body temperature & pain. Thus, reducing inflammation may result in a reduction of the discomforts associated with the ulcer. Additionally, Tea Tree oil is used on foot ulcers is, because Tea Tree oil contains a completely completely completely completely completely unique blend of constituents that cannot be found in this combination anywhere else in nature. In 1978, G. Swords & G. L. K. Hunter authored an article titled: ‘Composition of Australian Tea-Tree Oil (Melaleuca alternifolia)’ in the Journal of Agriculture & Food Chemistry (vol. 26, 1978, pp. 734-9). This article pointed out that Tea Tree contains viridiflorene, present at I %, B- terpineol (0.24%) 1-terpineol (trace amounts) & allyl hexanoate (trace amounts).
Second, Tea Tree oil has been reported to have strong antiseptic properties. An antiseptic is defined as an anti-microbial substance that is applied to living tissue or skin to reduce the possibility of infection, sepsis (defined below), or putrefaction (defined below).
Sepsis is defined as a serious medical issue, resulting from the immune response to a severe infection, where by harmful bacteria enters the bloodstream. Once in the bloodstream the entire body may be under attack. In severe cases organ failure & death may result. According to www.sepsis.com, “early diagnosis & appropriate treatment can greatly improve survival rates.” Unfortunately, “since November 21, 2001, it is estimated that 4,804,000 people have developed severe sepsis, & 1,377,000 are estimated to have died.”
A completely different issue that many people with foot ulcers sometimes face, is the strong, piercing, foul odor that can be produced by foot ulcers. Putrefaction describes this & is defined as the decomposition of animal proteins, speed up by bacteria that feeds on that protein, allowing flesh to rot or decompose, sometimes resulting in a putrid odor.
A small list of additional essential oils has also been noted to assist with ulcers: Frankincense (Boswell carteri), Rose (Rosa dmascena), Clary Sage (Salvia Sclarea), Lemon (Citrus limonum) & Bergamot (Citrus bergamia).
Two processes are suggested for the application of essential oils to an open wound. First, you may select to put one or two drops of the essential oil directly onto a cotton ball or a cotton swab. Then simply dab the ulcer with the cotton ball. Second, you may select to make a compress. A compress can either be hot or cold. Typically, a cold compress is used in the presence of a fever, acute pain or swelling. You may select to alternate between a hot & cold compress until you are able to determine which one produces the best results. You may even find that a combination of a hot & cold compress used at alternating times, is the best option.
To make a compress, place 6 drops of essential oil into a small bowl of water. Then soak a piece of absorbent material in the mixture. The material can literally be anything the holds the liquid, such as a towel or washcloth. Do not get rid of the piece of material until it cannot hold one more drop of the liquid mixture. Then get rid of the material & twist it until the excess liquid is drained out of the material. This is done simply to stop excessive spillage. After draining the extra liquid, the cloth may be applied to the open wound. The compress should remain on the wound for at least 2 hours. However, leaving the compress on the wound overnight, may be even more beneficial.
In summary, Tea Tree oil is a noted antiseptic & may work very well to reduce the microbial invaders that attempt to attack the body through the open soar of a foot ulcer. Tea Tree oil may establish a barrier so strong that it is able to keep bacterial & viral invaders out of the blood stream. This anti-microbial function of Tea Tree oil may also be the necessary component that results in a reduction or total elimination of the distracting odor that diabetic foot ulcers sometimes produce. In addition to these benefits, Tea Tree oil is also believed to possess qualities that may be able to assist the body with inflammation created by the body in reaction to the trauma of the ulcer. This benefits the body as the pain & the swelling associated with the inflammation is normalized or reduced.

Is there a cure for Type 2 diabetes? If some herbal supplement manufacturers & natural cure promoters are to be believed, there is. Unfortunately, scientific studies & results say otherwise. Diabetes is still an incurable disease although it can be managed effectively, something that about 15 million people in the U.S. will find relief in.
What is Type 2 diabetes?
Type 2 diabetes mellitus was once referred to as non-insulin-dependent diabetes that causes an abnormality in the metabolism of carbohydrates, protein & lipids in the body. Type 2 diabetes is also called the adult-onset diabetes because it often appears in adults as a result of lifestyle choices.
It is a condition that is associated with impaired secretion of & resistance to insulin. Insulin resistance can lead to the advancement of the disease & its complications. Symptoms of this disease develop gradually & people who have Type 2 diabetes will usually not recognize that they have the disease until it has progressed.
How is Type 2 diabetes ‘cured’ or at least, treated?
Treatment is very important when dealing with Type 2 diabetes because it can lead to complications that are life-threatening. These complications include kidney failure, heart disease & blindness. In fact, diabetes mellitus is one of the leading causes of blindness in people between the ages of 20 & 75. Diabetes is also the reason behind 40% of kidney failure cases & has been known to cause cardiovascular problems.
The main thrust of any treatment for Type 2 diabetes is to control the amount of glucose found in the blood. This helps stop symptoms such as pain, tingling, burning & numbness & to stop other complications. The treatment will not cure these symptoms, but they can be effectively minimized & the complications avoided.
For Type 2 diabetes, a semblance of a cure can be produced with the use of a controlled & sensible diet, regular exercise & weight loss. This is usually the first course of treatment, primarily because weight & a lack of physical activity are often lead contributors to Type 2 diabetes.
Diabetes diet & lifestyle
There is no specialized diet for Type 2 diabetes, but portion control & preference for healthier foods should be implemented. Typically, people who have diabetes will work with a nutritionist or dietitian in order to create a diet plan to regulate blood sugar levels. A sensible diabetic meal plan usually involves many types of carbohydrates, a moderate amount of protein & low fat.
Regular physical activity is important to help stop complications involving the heart & also to promote weight loss. Recently, researchers found that the risk of a person developing Type 2 diabetes increases by about 4% with every pound of weight exceeding his or her ideal range. Weight loss, combined with a good diet plan appears to help the body process insulin effectively.
Living a sensible lifestyle, while still not a cure, is usually enough to regulate a diabetic’s blood sugar level. However, this may not be effective as a long-term treatment for Type 2 diabetes. Eventually, medication will have to be used. Oral medications are often prescribed as the first course of treatment. These include drugs such as sulfonylureas, metformin, alpha-glucosidase inhibitors, troglitazone & repaglinide. These drugs are formulated to bring down blood glucose levels. If taken in controlled doses & monitored, these drugs should be an effective means with which to manage Type 2 diabetes.
Oral medications are effective for about 40% of people who have Type 2 diabetes while about 40% will need insulin injections. A percentage of these will require a combination of both oral medications & insulin injections while about ten percent will do well using just a good diet & exercise regimen.
Beyond the hype
When headlines trumpet that a cure for Type 2 diabetes is possible, they’re almost tempting to believe. The only problem is that this news may be misleading & can be quite dangerous because until now, no cure for Type 2 diabetes has been discovered. It remains an incurable condition & will have to be managed with a combination of medications & lifestyle changes.
There will always be hype about a ‘cure’ for Type 2 diabetes & somewhere, some one will always have a reason to want to believe in it. However, remember that any scientific breakthrough that will make a enormousdifference in the lives of millions of men & women all over the world will mean big news. If a ‘cure’ for Type 2 diabetes suddenly appears, exercise prudence & common sense when considering it.
The future of Type 2 diabetes
Research about Type 2 diabetes is ongoing & the main goal is to finally find a cure for this disease. Its exact cause is still unclear, although there is plenty of research being performed on any effects environmental & genetic factors might contribute. As of now, new drugs & methods are probably the nearest we can get to a cure. Until a real solution is found, we will have to rely on these methods & medications in order to ensure that Type 2 diabetes is managed & its symptoms & associated complications are minimized.

Reductil slimming pills - these seem to have been in the news virtually every day recently. They have been hailed the ‘breakthrough in weight-loss treatment’. But can a slimming pill actually work, or is the only way to lose weight & have a healthier lifestyle through exercise & a well balanced diet? Let’s take a closer look:
What does Reductil contain?
Reductil’s active ingredient is sibutramine, which can be found in many medication’s designed for obesity. It helps in the effort to lose weight by targeting the nervous system, especially the neurotransmitters.
Neurotransmitters are responsible for sending messages to the body’s nerve cells. Reductil prevents two neurotransmitters (serotonin & noradranline) from being reuptaked. These two neurotransmitters affect our metabolism & our mood.
Reductil increases the amount of serotonin & noradranline in our body. The end result is that somebody taking Reductil feels much more full after eating, & ultimately wil not need to eat as much food as normal. This is referred to as satiety.
